Alternative Energy

Living off the Grid

Why don't more people live off the grid? A better question might be why would you want to live ON the grid? Just like paying rent you are throwing your hard earned money away to the power and gas companies month after month. After you consume the energy it's gone and so is your money. It's like throwing money out the window. If you add up all the money you have paid to the energy companies over the years you would probably have enough money to buy some of the more expensive residential energy systems many times over.

When you invest in your own energy system you own it, it's yours. Besides providing you with free energy it can increase the value of your home and you can even sell the system if you ever decide to and get much of your money back. You can't do that when you are buying energy. With systems that use free energy like wind or solar you never have to pay an energy bill again. And in many cases you can make money by selling your excess energy to the power company. They will be paying you every month instead of you paying them. While you are away from home and not using energy you will have the pleasure of knowing that your energy system is there making you money.

With your own energy system you are taking responsibility for your own energy needs. You will no longer be dependent on the energy companies or be subject to the rising cost of energy. When the power goes out for everyone else you will still have power.

The major drawback to having your own energy system such as a solar system has usually been the initial cost of purchasing and installing the system. Many of the systems for sale are quite expensive. But it doesn't have to cost that much. There are ways to get the materials and even build a lot of them yourself for a fraction of the cost. For just a couple hundred dollars you can start generating your own power. How to generate your own energy.
